A broken nail can happen unexpectedly – while closing a bag, pulling a door handle, or doing housework. Besides looking unpleasant, it can also cause pain. Here’s how to give first aid:
1. Clean the area
Wash hands with warm water and mild soap to reduce infection risk.
2. Disinfect
Use an antiseptic or alcohol-based solution. If bleeding occurs, gently press with clean gauze until it stops.
3. Trim or file carefully
If the nail is partially broken, smooth sharp edges with a file. If badly damaged, cut off the broken part to prevent further tearing.
4. Temporary patching
At home, you can use a tea bag paper or nail strengthener, fixing it with clear polish until you can repair it professionally.
5. Moisturize and care
Apply nail oil or cream afterward to help recovery. If the nail is deeply broken or very painful, seek professional help.
A small accident doesn’t have to turn into a big problem – quick and proper care prevents further damage.
